Our Catchment Area

The West Cork Women Against Violence Project catchment area covers most of the west Cork area. This includes the area from Bandon to Macroom and stretching up to the Kerry border, to the peninsulas (Beara, Mizen and the Sheep’s Head), the islands and all those in between. The North & West Cork Strategic Plan 2002-2020 produced by Cork County Council states that West Cork is an area larger than many Irish counties and has no towns of 4,000+ population and poor road structure. According to Women’s Aid statistics, 1 in 5 women experience violence in intimate relationships. Transferring this to the area covered by the WCWAVP, it is possible that there are 2,500 women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence in the West Cork area. In itself, the issue of violence against women is isolating. This difficulty is further compounded in rural areas like West Cork where women live in geographically isolated areas and in island communities. Many of the women using our service live in areas with little or no public transport and are often many miles away from the nearest villages much less services such as Legal Aid. For our Project to offer accompaniment to a refuge eg from the Beara peninsula to Cork may involve 6 hours travel time. The nearest refuges are in Cork city and in Tralee, Co. Kerry. If you are outside of this geographic area, we can refer you to your nearest service. You can also check our to our listings on this website under “Useful Contacts”.
